Catherine Hughes - Narrative Designer
A little about me
I'm Catherine, Narrative Designer at Maze Theory (Saltwater Games). Born, raised and based in the UK, my work has included VR games and MMO prototyping.
I am passionate about the blend between story, narrative, immersion and interactivity in game spaces - developed from my love of gaming and enjoyment of stories in all forms from an early age. Games are more than a form of entertainment: they tell stories, create worlds, draw on the imagination, build stronger social ties and help foster skill-development.
My portfolio can be accessed through the menu at the top of the page - feel free to have a look at what I have created in both my professional experience and spare time. If you would like to see example of works from my portfolio, please request this using the 'contact' page, where I will provide you access to my work. For access to NDA work, this can be granted when offered an interview.

At this company, I've had the opportunity to collaborate on VR titles, an ARG, and pre-production for an MMO. Across these, I have worked on world-building, writing scripts/barks, keeping lore consistent, integrating player guidance and more.
At the beginning of 2024, I was promoted to a mid-level Narrative Designer.
Work on ‘Hyperspace’ involved the process of designing narrative stories and game features during pre-production. Working both individually and collaboratively, I helped ensure all developments would contribute to player satisfaction and enjoyment of the game.
As the contracted Narrative Designer and Game Writer on their new mobile game ‘Sunrise Village’, I was brought into the project to help ideate the overall story, tie individual quests and game mechanics into the narrative and write the dialogue for the main storyline.
Working within a team, I helped research, design and write content for a variety of transmedia projects. This work focused on the importance of character development and perspective - understanding how these can completely change the impact of content on a reader/viewer/player/listener.
